village & environs

Our village of Castelnau d'Aude in LanguedocCastelnau d’Aude dates back to the 10th century and boasts some lovely old streets and ancient buildings. It is said that a house on Rue Haute was used as a relais (resting place) for pilgrims en route to Santiago de Compostella in Spain. The old shell symbol that denotes this is above the door of the house. The Black Prince also crossed the river beside the village and fortunately kept going. He sacked the village down the road…..phew !!
